El quíntuple campeón mundial de Fórmula Uno, Juan Manuel Fangio, tiene su monumento en Buenos Aires, un homenaje que coincide con los diez años del fallecimiento del piloto argentino.
A new smile for bronze
The five-time World champion of Formula I, Juan Manuel Fangio, has his monument in Buenos Aires, a tribute that coincides with the 10th anniversary of the Argentine pilot’s death. The sculpture made at natural scale, which weights almost three tons, shows Fangio standing close to the mythical Flecha de Plata, a Mercedes Benz W196. It is located in front of the headquarters of DaimlerChrysler Argentina, a company that has been very close to the famous “Chueco” (his nickname), which supported the construction of the monument along with the Foundation Juan Manuel Fangio and Repsol YPF. This is the fifth sculpture of a series of monuments installed in Montmeló (1996), Nürburgring (2002), Monaco (2003) and Monza (2004). It has been made by sculptor Joaquim Ros Sabaté, 68, who was born in Barcelona and is a Fangio enthusiast: "I followed him; I admired him, but never met him personally. His feats and his spirit for fighting captivated me”, said the artist during the inauguration act. Ros Sabaté studied at the Superior School of Fine Arts San Jorge, in Barcelona, and the sculptural group of horses in the Parque de la Trinidad, Barcelona, and the busts he made in honor of King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofia of Spain, are some of his most outstanding works. The monument is located in Azucena Villaflor and Juana Manso streets, in Puerto Madero district, a few blocks from the Casa Rosada. As a curiosity, fans will be able to get into the car and take pictures “driving”. Juan Manuel Fangio was one of the most successful racers in the history of motoring and one of the most outstanding personalities in the Formula One after Second World War. He was born on June 24, 1911, in Balcarce (province of Buenos Aires) and run his first race in 1936. Four years later, Fangio won his first Grand Prix in Argentina. In 1950, he raced for Alfa Romeo, and in 1951 he won his first worldwide title. In 1954, he entered Mercedes-Benz and became a champion again, a title that repeated a year later. When the German car company left the races, he got his forth and his fifth titles (1956/57) on a Lancia-Ferrari and a Maserati. .
